I played FFXI for a solid 3-4 months back in 2004. I liked the "Aggro" system for monsters where the monsters will attack party members who deal the most damage over time (or when a player does heal spells or abilities) or what not.
Do most MMORPG games use this system now? If not, which ones do? Do non-MMORPG games use this system?
Thanks for your input!![]()
Less than a year before I left - PvP weapons were balanced (Oct 2004)

I regret a little that I had left ![]()
I found this link just recently ... Very cool that a lot of "PvP imbalance" stuff that I wondered about was addressed.

however from what I remember from late-1999-2003:
A) mages were all-powerful since
1) they could use bolts (War magic) at close or far range, killing with 1-2 hits
2) could wear armor, so can sustain more than a few hits from warriors or archers
3) could apply the protection spells
4) naturally were anti-tank/warrior since they can bypass the warrior's shield
5) drains (of life energy etc) / harms (within range)
B) tank/warriors:
1) have a shield, so are naturally anti-archer
2) had some weapons that ignore protection spells so they were decent against mages
3) shields did not block mage bolts, so are vulnerable to mages
C) archers:
1) were vulnerable to both mages at close range
2) and vulnerable to warriors (weaker melee defense and no shield)
3) no strong attack at long or short range, though can fire rapidly
4) I remember there was one bow that can ignore protection spells too
5) shields block arrows, so their attacks against warriors are weak
So if anything, mages had an advantage over both archers and warriors when the original design (from what I read should have been:
MAGES > WARRIOR > ARCHER > MAGES
a power triangle. So my point is, mages were too strong.
What do you have to add?

I played this game for about 3-4 months at the end of 2004, and I quit playing because I felt the addiction starting to kick in![]()
Anyhow I only played this game on the PC - with keyboard, and the controls worked fine. The art and graphics seemed unified - not overly done.
I missed the Beta, but I played when it was released until 2003 (on and off).
from what I remember most
PLUSES == archers / crossbow users can fire arrows and bolts that followed a ballistic path (very cool effect), third person POV with full chase cam that you can control, optional first person POV
MINUSES == PK seemed to be imbalanced and they never got it right
