So i've gathered a bit of a reputation on these boards as a bit of a WAR fan boy. So for me to write this is actually pretty significant.
The way things are going... WAR is pretty much going to fail... hard. It had good population to start with... but imo, it was released far too early and people have simply buggered off to other MMORPGs that are more balanced/polished.
However, bugs/imbalance/unppolishness aside... the MAIN problems i see here with WAR that NEED to be FIXED SOON are:
1. Population - there are too many servers and they need to be merged
2. Social aspects - we need item linking NOW and we need duelling NOW, as well as more emotes
3. More responsive combat - enough said.
4. Some kind of renovation of the keep/battle field objective system. Frankly, PVEing undefended keeps and BOs all day isn't my idea of fun... and i happen to be on the most populated EU server. Even IF there isn't some kind of increased incentive for defending, at least make the PVE part more interesting (e.g. introduce a more complex mini game for Rams, instead of just a 'click on the line' game.......)
5. General bugs... especially the obvious, simple ones e.g. the dismounting bug. I mean COMMON! HOW HARD IS IT TO FIX?
6. Make it easier to lock zones, and dont have Serpent's passage on the front all the time - or introduce a SINGLE QUEST for ALL the scenarios.
So yeah, coming from a former WAR fanboy, here are my thoughts. These issues really need to be addressed, otherwise this will be an empty game within a very short period of time. I mean, the biggest, bestest guild on destruction side on our server all just left for another game recently... they were Server Police of Eltharion.
Fail? Nope, although I may not be a subscriber for much longer. I suspect that it will sit in a state of mediocrity for some time. Though, what else is there to expect really? Nothing stellar can really ever come about as long as games stick to the middle ground.
While I am a fan of WAR I must say that things have taken a definite turn for the worse since launch. The huge ORVR battles that were the norm throughout beta are a rarity in live. What ORVR there is quickly turns into a very boring and unappealing game of keep tag. The game was closer to balance a month before release and some of the decisions at mythic to turn the game into a loot grind akin to wow have really turned me off and im really not sure that I am going to be able to justify my paying to play this for too much longer.

Since we have all these mmo's that are based on good and evil setup, why not use the ultimate good/evil source of our time?
I think the Bible would be an excellent lore for an historical/real-time mmo
With the true epic battle of God and Satan, along with stories of Adam and Eve, Cain and Abel, Noah,
Moses, king David, Samson, Solomon, John the Baptist and ofc Jesus
Gods army, the angels, Jesus and his diciples and all his followers would ofc be the good side,
while the evil side could be represented by the Lucifer's army, the Romans, Sodom and Gomorrah, Pharisees and Sadducees, the scribes
Pontius Pilate could be somewhat indifferent.
Well I think it could work anyway, at least the story would be epic.
Well, this would cause all sorts of issues :P
For one the schism between Christians, Jews and Muslims. All three are based off the Old Testament. Then you have the issues within each of those faiths. On the Christian side you have the Catholics, Protestants, Eastern Orthodox and all of the other different sects. On the Jewish side there are a couple of different sects that I know of and the same with the Muslim side. Do not think anything like this could ever come about on a mainstream basis. Sure, there could be a "Left Behind" mmo or something on a small scale hosted by an individual church. But, if you tried to go mainstream good grief. Just imagine the lawsuits if you went with a Christian slant. People of the Jewish faith would have a field day filing suits that hte game was anti-semetic etc.
Personally, I haven't left yet but am closer and closer as the days creep on by. The RVR game is a huge disappointment compared to how it was in beta. No one hardly wants to do orvr everyone wants to sit in scenario queues all day long. Another reason is that tanks can not tank outside of pve. With the increase to rdps and no change to defense and itemization, tanks now die exponentially faster in rvr combat. Finally bugs that have been known about for months, specifically in regards to tanks (as I play a chosen heh) are being pushed further and further back as rdps get all the love tells me that either a) I need to reroll to a rdps class or b) stop paying and divert my energy elsewhere until mythic gets its head out of its backside.

My first post but I am a veteran online gamer. I started playing with Ultima Online when it first came out and I have played several, including: Asherons Call, Earth and Beyond, Eve, Horizons, City of Heroes, WoW, EQ2, Anarchy Online, Guild Wars, Lord of the Rings Online, D&D Online, Meridian 59 and a couple others. I enjoyed them all to some extent but I have to say my biggest thrills were playing Ultima Online in it's infancy being chased by a pk'er, knowing that death meant a loss of potentially everything. (By the pk'er or by the dirty old dial up connection that I had to use). Yes, it SUCKED to die back then but thats what made it a rush and made you hunch over your monitor till yours eyes bugged out of your head. Asherons Call was also a favourite, death meant the loss of xp, stats AND a couple pieces of your good gear. It meant running back to your body to try and reclaim your stuff, and the thing that just killed you was usually still standing by your body. All the other games I have played have minor inconvenient death penalties but nothing like those two games.
Does anyone know any good games that offer a similar experience? I don't care if it's sci-fi or fantasy or whatever. Just a good game that makes you pay attention to death and what it brings.
Thanks for any help!
DD
Any game can have the harshest of death penalties, its up to you as the player to enforce it on yourself though. Back when I actually played pen and paper D&D and AD&D, Champions, and a handful of other rpgs we had a very simple manner of handling death penalties. If a character was taken to -20 hps, I think it was, or had had some other unrecoverable injury well... we had a steel trash bin next to the playing table. We almost always gamed by candle light, and if our character had died well, we took the char. sheet lit it on fire and dropped it into the trash bin.
So, when you die in an mmo, just log out, go to the character screen and delete it. :) Then you can reroll and be satisfied that you are truly hardcore :D
