Well Odin server is so full at this point they have allowed free character transfer this month. Diabolos I can tell you seems like a ghost town and Bahamut is not bad for people & ls friendly. I am from Sylph and it is always about medium on population. The linkshells rang from just social to end game fanatics, current list of them is on alla in that server section.
Best place to look for live information from the game on various groups is at the Linkshell Community run by Square. That information is right from the game and if the ls takes the time to make their entry you can bet they are at least trying to be active and open to members.
Good luck and stop in to the RGoNots if you decide on Sylph.
Call SE about the deleted account. Very few people I know have not been able to get their characters back in recent times.

A game like FFXI though. 14 days is not enough to fall in love with it usually. lol
I didn't get addicted till like a month or two into it, and the addiction only got worse.
I had my first member to linkshell on this 14 day deal. Would you believe he was rank 4 and level 30 before it was over. He could not get to Khazam with the demo but he made same mega use of this thing. Then he got the whole package now to keep on playing. The game really is not as bad as it used to be for new gamers and getting up some levels to just be able to travel in the world.
Welcome to FFXI, the below has most of the sites for the game you need to see in the community. Also the sites have threads for linkshells on each server. Get yourself one of those first, I run one on Sylph with about 150 guys. Enjoy sir !
I think you forget one of the biggest changes was that it went to the 360' platform and brought in more console players that had never played Final Fantasy at all. Many of those who I know playing on the 360 do not even know what we are talking about when we speak about the rest of the series and how the jobs, chocobos or just anything worked. This on thing change face of the people who play the game and have been the catalyst for many of the on going changes. It basically moved FFXI out of the closed world of Playstation into the main stream without really 1 line of code at first.
Answer is yes, this is not the Final Fantasy that you 'dad' played but a thriving, more up to date and content rich MMO then most out there now.
Now that is a intelligent reply to my concerns. Your right there could be increase in other areas of the guild market. I will be very interesting to see what this does to the game. But as for it being the greatest thing to come down the pike in ages I am sorry but not in the least. There is a lot of things it will not do good for the game.
