    • How many times have you had your fingers burned by new MMO's? (Poll)
    • I get burned a lot because I'm looking for a great new mmo and I refuse to base my decision on the hype, fanbois, and trolling that is a staple of these forums.  As they always say, one man's trash is another man's treasure.  A dev could make a spectacular mmo and it could bomb simply because of the bad word of mouth that always accompanies any new mmo.

Of course, you can at least get a general idea of the gameplay first, such as sandbox or themepark, but really the only way to judge a game is to play it.  So with that in mind, I fully expect to get burned by quite a few more mmos until I find the one that fits my playstyle.  It's not a big deal, though, because it's a risk I'm willing to accept.  It also means that I may find I enjoy a game that I would have thought I wouldn't, so it keeps my mind open to other possibilities.

    • Skill system versus Level system
    • Well sure skill based systems are also a level based system, just in a different context.  But what makes the skill system appealing is that you choose where to place those skills rather then picking a class and leveling the character and skill level with no chance to change later on.  For example, in wow you create a warrior and level your character while at the same time leveling your skills.  If you want to change to a mage, you must create a new character.  In a skill system, you wouldn't need to create a new character to change, you'd simply start training different skills.

Ideally, the best skill system would be one where you can level your skills, at a later time change them to another skill set (e.g. become a doctor and then change to a bounty hunter), and at the same time have your skills you've already earned stay available so that you can change back to a previous skill set without the need to retrain.  In this system, you could theoretically be able to create a character that learns all skills in the game, can pick and choose the skill combinations that the player likes best, and can move to and from different skills with no penalty provided the skill has already been learned.  This method provides the most comprehensive and compelling leveling system possible.

    • Is it really the best ? if not...
    • WAR is pretty decent, but imo not great.  That being said I think I"m only level 23, so perhaps it gets better later on.  Yet, I just have no real desire to play the game and level up.  Perhaps I'm burnt out on mmos, but the hook just isn't there for me.  It's very shallow as far as anything beyond fighting.  The quests are generic, and it's basically like playing a half-rate version of wow again.  Don't get me wrong, it's certainly not bad, but pve questing / leveling could be much better.  Of course, if you like pvp it's lots of fun to do battlegrounds while leveling, and does provide a nice respite from pve tedium.  But bgs soon get boring, at least to me, and I wouldn't want to level primarily on bg instances.  I've been open to RvR lakes, but they are usually quite unbalanced assuming that you can even find one that is populated.  Of course now I'm behind so in T3 the RvR lakes are pretty dead as a general rule.  I hope they will be better once I reach a higher level.

There's a lot of things that would make this game better for me, and it would take a bit of space to list them.  In the end it's a filler game for me that I play at times but never have much motivation to log in.  I'd like to get to 40 and play the end game, but I often wonder if it's worth the next 17 presumably tedious levels.
